1. Early life
Rai was born on 31 December 1864 in Lahore, British India. His mother, Yogita Devi, was a devout Hindu and his father, Karam Chand, was a Hindu banker.
He was educated in the Hindu tradition and later attended the Government College of Lahore.
Rai’s first published work was a poem, “The Death of a Woman” in 1885. By 1887 he had become active in the Indian independence movement and was imprisoned from 1887-1888.
He was active in the Indian National Congress and was a leading member of the Indian delegation to the Second Round Table Conference in London in late 1892.
