The life and work of Lala Lajpat Rai: India’s first freedom fighter

Lala Lajpat Rai was an Indian revolutionary and politician who fought for Indian independence from the British. He was a leader of the Indian National Congress party and headed its Lahore branch before being arrested and imprisoned.

1. Early life

Rai was born on 31 December 1864 in Lahore, British India. His mother, Yogita Devi, was a devout Hindu and his father, Karam Chand, was a Hindu banker.
